Assuming your first dates are going smoothly, if you’re seeing a woman who owns a pet (or two), you should expect that at some point you’ll come face to face with it (or them). It might seem overkill to think ahead, but the truth is for many girls their pets are like their young children. A girl who dotes on her dog, cat, or snake, will want to know that since her date can get along with it. If she’s thinking about making you a semi-permanent fixture in her bedroom, you better get acceptance from them. If you’re not usually good with animals, here are a few tips to get through that initial encounter.
Her Pet Likes You
This one is easy. If her pet comes to the door wagging its tail, or purrs while you’re scratching its head then congratulations! You’ve just earned points without trying. That is of course if your date actually sees this interaction between yourself and her pet, which is what you need to make sure happens. You can win additional points by asking her a thoughtful question about her pet. For example, if you notice her cat has unusual coloring, ask her about that. Don’t let her pet take over the conversation, though. Stop at one question since you want to show only that you’re prepared to accept her pet as part of the overall package, not that you want to share pet care with her.
Her Pet Doesn’t Like You
It happens. Not all animals are friendly to humans besides their owners. It’s usually not personal, although sometimes it is. If you arrive at your date’s place and her dog starts barking its head off on seeing you, the odds are she’ll be embarrassed. If she is, the key to gaining your points is to show that you’re not bothered by the hostility, and that you don’t hold it against her or her pet. Keep your head cool and keep your distance from the animal. Don’t try to engage it beyond your initial hello, one reason being that you run the risk of provoking it into a stronger reaction, like hissing or snapping, which would not go down well. Let your date take the lead in deciding whether her pet gets to stay in the same room with you. Unless you feel like you’re in real physical danger, stand your ground and focus on her instead.
